A few people wanted to see McFly in concert, so it would be fun if we went to see them at Newmarket Racecourse on the August Bank Holiday weekend. This is a similar setup to when we saw The Corrs at Haydock. The racecourse is quite remote, so a good place to base ourselves for a few nights would be Cambridge which is about 11 miles (25 minutes) away by car.
Cambridge accommodation
Dan, Mark and Richard will be staying in their campervan, probably at Cherry Hinton site for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights (approx £100). Camping with a tent is also possible here. This is about 3 miles south of Cambridge city centre (2 and a bit miles from the train station), and is accessible by bus, walking or bike.
There are plenty of hotels in Cambridge, with varying budgets and styles. There are a number of Travelodges, with some extremely good prices starting at £105 in total for the three nights in double or twin rooms. Premier Inn is more expensive, and there are many other options on hotels.com.
Race day and the concert (Saturday)
There are a total of 7 horse races starting at 1:40pm, with the last at 5:05pm. The concert starts at 5:55pm and is due to end at 7:25pm. It takes place on the "July course" which has a number of options of enclosures:
- "Garden Enclosure" which is £29.12 each. This is more geared up for families, and most of the racing can only be seen on the big screen. The advantage is that you are allowed to bring a picnic and limited alcohol (4 cans beer/cider or 1 bottle of wine per person). Any chairs that we bring will need to be put into cars or left at the luggage drop while the concert is on.
- "Grandstand & Paddock Enclosures" which are £39.20 each.
- "Premier Enclosure" which are £44.80 each. The advantage of this is that this is the location of the concert stage, so we would be more likely to get a good spot.
The racecourse puts on coach transport from Cambridge railway station, but must be booked in advance. This costs £10 per person for the return journey. This departs Cambridge at 12:30pm and returns 30 minutes after the concert has finished. Alternatives are to drive (£7.50 parking), arrange a private taxi, or get the direct train to Newmarket where there is a complimentary shuttle bus to the racecourse.
